The 2014 Detroit Blight Removal Task Force identified almost 41,000 abandoned homes to be torn down. Here, Water and Sewerage Department Deputy Director/Chief Engineer Palencia Mobley explains how the department and partners are using the structures' concrete basements to manage stormwater. "This pilot project demonstrates how vacant properties can become green infrastructure that enhances neighborhood quality of life while improving water quality in the Detroit River and Great Lakes," says project leader Joan Nassauer of the University of Michigan School of Natural Resources and Environment.
