We invited ourselves to student and young-professional activities at the American Water Works Association’s (AWWA) annual convention last month in Denver. It included a job fair, mentoring program, a preparing for your future workshop, Fresh Ideas poster competition, and — most exciting — a half-day scavenger hunt.
We were grouped into four- to six-person teams and received a list of 27 items to look for:
- People: a current, past, or future AWWA president; a Class III or IV distribution or treatment operator; someone who’d been in the drinking water industry for 30 years.
- Things in the Exhibition Hall: a company that sells/manufactures chemical storage/injection equipment; a company that helped invent ice pigging; a company that provides technical services to water utilities mainly in the Midwest.
- Things in downtown Denver: the longest street in the country; a natural source of water; home of Colorado’s policy makers.
It was a great way to network and learn about products before the conference began. And we made some friends.
