The Water Quality Association's (WQA's) Gold Seal certification program has certified water treatment point-of-entry and point-of-use since 1959. The program is accredited by the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) and the Standards Council of Canada (SCC).

In 2013, the WQA Sustainability Certification Program was established and it is currently the only environmental certification program in the world to earn ANSI accreditation to ISO 17065 and ISO 14024 for Type I Environmental Labeling. The accreditation provides independent, third-party verification that a product is environmentally responsible in all phases of it's life cycle.

There have been several water filters that have been certified by WQA Gold Seal for reducing lead in drinking water such as the pour-through pitcher/carafe, faucet mount, counter-top connected  to sink faucet, and plumbed-in to separate tap or to kitchen sink.
