According to a report by the U.S. Department of Labor's Bureau of Labor Statistics, the number of fatalities for solid waste collection workers increased from 20 in 2009, to 26 in 2010 — meaning the industry is now ranked as the seventh most dangerous in the country. The jump in fatalities comes after several years of a declining injury rate. Officials from the National Solid Wastes Management Association say they will increase efforts to prevent accidents and release an updated Safety Manual in 2012.
