Corrosion literally eats away at budgets. Luckily, there are more options than ever to keep that from happening.

Prices fluctuate by year and location, but expect to pay a premium for less corrosive materials. Keep in mind that the higher cost of noncorrosive deicers can be somewhat offset by applying it with spreaders and sprayers that are designed to reduce material waste. Of course, noncorrosive materials are less important if equipment is corrosion-resistant in the first place.

Spreader material

One of the best places to start is to spec equipment with rust-resistant material hoppers. Not every brand is available with steel, stainless steel, and polyethylene models, so find out what each manufacturer offers before selecting a supplier.

  • Steel: Most common and most susceptible to corrosion. Must be washed after every use; paint chips must be touched up frequently or they will start to corrode very quickly.
  • Stainless steel: Corrosion-resistant but much more expensive. Available from some manufacturers.
  • Polyethylene: Introduced in the 1990s, offers a lightweight, noncorrosive, and price-competitive alternative to steel and stainless steel. Offered by most manufacturers.
