The completion of the new Pearl Harbor Memorial Bridge in New Haven, Connecticut, marks a major milestone for the I-95 New Haven Harbor Crossing Corridor Improvement Program, which WSP | Parsons Brinckerhoff serves as program manager.

The new bridge, a 10-lane crossing of the Quinnipiac River, replaces the existing Pearl Harbor Memorial Bridge, known locally as the Q-Bridge. Built in 1958 to accommodate 40,000 vehicles daily, the Q-Bridge now carries more than 140,000 vehicles per day. The completion of the bridge was celebrated during a grand opening and dedication ceremony on Saturday, September 19, 2015. Just under 10,000 people attended and walked over the new bridge, which opened to traffic on September 28.

There will be four lanes of I-95 southbound traffic on the new infrastructure. Since 1999, WSP | Parsons Brinckerhoff has managed the I-95 New Haven Crossing Corridor Improvement Program for the Connecticut Department of Transportation (CTDOT).

In addition to the new bridge, the I-95 New Haven Harbor Crossing Corridor Improvement Program includes improvements to 7.2 miles of I-95, the reconstruction of the I-95/I-91/Route 34 interchange, and the State Street commuter rail station, which was completed in 2000. The entire I-95 program, the largest and most comprehensive multimodal transportation program in Connecticut’s history, is scheduled for completion in fall of 2016. 

The Pearl Harbor Memorial Bridge is the first bridge in the U.S. with an extradosed design—a hybrid of a cable-stayed and box girder structure—which allows the structure to accommodate longer spans than a girder bridge while using shorter towers than a conventional cable-stayed bridge.
