The foundation’s survey was administered to 152 transportation professionals including members of each state transportation agency, the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA), and other government agencies. The Highway Sustainability Research Center at the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth conducted the survey.
Agencies from 27 states took the survey. Half of those agencies routinely employ GTR in asphalt for crack sealing, chip seals, dense-graded hot-mix asphalt, and joint sealant. About half also said that they have a specification for using recycled tire rubber. Fifty-nine percent use terminal blending to incorporate GTR into asphalt pavement. Respondents reported the following advantages: cost effectiveness, environmental benefits, and less maintenance. Disadvantages include problems with blending and placement leading to environmental concerns. The full findings can be found at www.ra-foundation.org.
