Pro Walk-Pro Bike-Pro Place bills itself as the premier conference in North America for walking and bicycling professionals from the public and private sectors. Launched in 1980 as Pro Bike, organizers added walking in 1980 and "placemaking" in 2012.
Last year, the 18th annual conference brought roughly 1,000 transportation engineers, public health advocates, elected officials, and other enthusiasts to Pittsburgh, which plans to be one of the top biking cities within 10 years.
In preparation, Public Works installed temporary lanes going in each direction on a bridge and protected bike lanes downtown.
"I've never seen never seen a public works project in Pittsburgh get put in place as fast as that one did," said the executive director of BikePGH, the city's biking advocacy organization.
