Parsons Brinckerhoff (PB) has been selected by the Minnesota Department of Transportation (Mn/DOT) and the Wisconsin Department of Transportation (WisDOT) to provide concept design and associated services for the St. Croix River Crossing between Stillwater, MN and Houlton, WI.

Located within 25 miles of Minneapolis-St. Paul, the new bridge will connect Trunk Highway 36 in Minnesota and WIS 64 in Wisconsin. In Minnesota, the existing highway corridor will be upgraded, while a new highway alignment will be constructed in Wisconsin. The bridge will be a segmental concrete structure comprising 3,460 feet of extradosed river spans and 1,580 feet of approach spans in Minnesota. The bridge will have 40-foot roadways in each direction and a 12-foot pedestrian trail. In addition two ramp structures will be constructed at the Minnesota approach.

The new bridge will replace a historic lift bridge. With seven towers and typical spans of 480 feet, the new bridge will provide an aesthetically pleasing structure that does not detract from the natural beauty of the area surrounding the St. Croix River, which is one of the original eight rivers designated under the National Wild and Scenic Rivers Act.

PB will be responsible for development of design criteria, concept and architectural drawings, foundation options as well as cost estimates. In addition, the firm will provide coordination with all stakeholders including local governments and a local Visual Quality Advisory Committee (VQAC), and will help establish a public outreach program.

Construction on the $200 million project is expected to begin in late 2013, with completion slated for 2016.
