The Rhode Island DOT will celebrate the 50th Anniversary of the Interstate on June 29, 2006. This milestone will recognize the impact the Dwight David Eisenhower Interstate and Defense Highway System has had on the transportation system.

The state will be participating in a series of national events, including:

  • Participation in the Tournament of Roses Parade on Jan. 2, 2006, to kick off 2006: The Year of the Interstate
  • A PBS documentary on the past, present, and future of the Interstate
  • A coffee-table book showcasing Interstate highlights in each state
  • An interactive Web site,, which debuted on June 29.
