Billed as the world's most advanced e-waste recycling facility, Sims Recycling Solutions' new, 287,000-suare-foot facility in Mississauga is the primary receiving point for Ontario's waste electronic and electrical equipment (WEEE) program.

Mandated in 2009 to divert computers, monitors, computer peripherals, printers, fax machines, and televisions from landfills, the industry-financed program [Ontario Electronic Stewardship (OES) was expanded last year to include items such as telephones, cell phones, cameras, and other audio/visual equipment. Over the last five years, Sims Recycling Solutions has recycled more than 45 million kilograms of e-waste from Ontario residents, who make up almost 40% of Canada's population.

The facility enables closed-loop, plastic-to-plastic recycling and features a fully mechanized process for zero-waste recycling of old cathode ray tube monitors and televisions.

In addition to private collectors, retail returns, and businesses, the facility accepts e-waste from qualified municipal sites.

Sims Recycling Solutions is the world's largest electronics recycler and a subsidiary of Sims Metal Management, the world's largest metals recycler.
