The national recycling rate rose from 34% to 34.1% when U.S. EPA revised the 2010 Municipal Solid Waste Characterization report, but mostly because the agency added caps and lids back into the calculation for polyethylene terephthalate (PET) bottles and jars. That increased the PET container rate to 29.2% from 21%, but reverting to former formulas caused the rate for consumer electronics to fall from 26.6% to 19.6%.
