The City of Round Rock, Texas, Parks and Recreation Department takes its mission — “creating a positive and memorable experience in people's lives”— so seriously that it’s created dedicated spaces for both dogs and skateboarders. It was six years in the making, but the department’s latest project serves yet another constituency: disabled children and their families.

The idea came from residents who suggested applying for a grant from Boundless Playgrounds, a non profit that’s developed 200 “truly inclusive playgrounds” throughout North America since 1997. (The City of Fort Wayne, Ind. and Town of Manchester, Conn., have boundless playgrounds). The money didn’t come through. Then another resident asked about getting adaptive swings for children with autism.

That prompted the award-winning department to raise the necessary $1.3 million locally. The city kicked in $600,000; the rest came from sponsorships and donations. Parks Development Manager David Buzzell says the 51,000-square-foot space benefits the community through its sheer popularity. Between 400 and 500 people use the park every day from 6 a.m. to midnight.

One of the in-kind contributors won the Experts’ Choice Award at World of Concrete 2013’s Crews That Rock Competition. Chasco Constructors donated all labor and materials for the concrete, earthwork, and underground utilities.
