Restoring confidence after a water crisis

The state’s National Guard unit drew emergency supplies of drinking water from the brigade support area when an unknown chemical leaking into its system prompted West Virginia American Water to issue a Do Not Use advisory.

Surface water testing challenged the health department and utility dealing with a cryptosporidiosis in Baker City, Ore., in 2013. A remote mountain location meant waiting days for results. Initial samples were drawn from an incorrectly identified source. The Drinking Water Advisory Communications Toolbox will be updated to address this type of outbreak.

Bethany Whisman and Blake Kenney volunteered to hand out bottled water to those who lost drinking water when the Elk River in West Virginia was contaminated in early 2014.
