Owner response to a Water Design-Build Council survey regarding design-build. Singe-point accountability is one of the most important benefits of having the designer and builder on the same contractual team. This closes the gap on disputes between the designer and builder that may occur when using design-bid-build or construction management-at-risk. It also takes the owner out of the middle of such disputes because they're resolved within the design-build team. Image: The Municipal Water and Wastewater Design Handbook/Water Design-Build Council

Advantages and disadvantages of prescriptive, performance, and progressive design-build contracts. Sometimes referred to as a “one-step selection process,” the progressive version — like performance-based design-build — allows for a high degree of innovation. But it allows for more owner interaction during design development and greater certainty of cost when converted to a lump-sum or guaranteed maximum price.
