Outsourcing vehicle parts acquisition

In 2013, Cedar Falls, Iowa, contracted NAPA IBS to provide parts for the entire public works department, including streets, traffic, solid waste, parks, water reclamation, and building maintenance operations. The company has served the government market for 22 years.

Most government-operated parts rooms can only provide a 50% fill rate, meaning parts are only available onsite for vehicle repairs half the time, says Mike Picardi of NAPA IBS. A vendor-managed inventory can increase the fill rate to 85% or more.

A vendor-supplied parts manager issues a part to a mechanic.
