The American Concrete Paving Association, Seal/No Seal Group, and the Illinois DOT are evaluating how sealing transverse joints affects concrete road performance. Early results are expected by 2015.
Designed to provide a baseline for calculating lifecycle costs associated with incorporating hot-pour and silicone sealants into road designs, the research is being conducted on a four-lane urban road with curbs, gutters and intersections.
To compare the effect of sealant on joint longevity, two unsealed sections, four Crafco Inc. RoadSaver 221 hot-pour sections, and four Crafco Inc. RoadSaver SL silicone sections are being placed using the same construction, environmental, and loading conditions. The narrow-cut joints in each 500-foot section are spaced at 15-foot intervals.
Walsh Construction Co. rebuilt the experimental section of road with 9.75 inches of dowelled Portland cement on top of a 12-inch crushed concrete base using a random transverse tine finish; Quality Saw and Seal Inc. poured the sealants in a single saw cut and reservoir cut design. The Seal/No Seal Group will compare the actual movement to the predicted movement for the design.
