The contract for the building of a new parallel tunnel on the Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel (CBBT) is to be awarded today to one of the three companies that revised their bids for the project: Dragados USA and Schiavone Construction Company ($755,987,318), Archer Western-Vinci Construction Tunnelbuilders ($785,883,000), and Bouygues TP/Traylor/Manson ($848,452,987). According to to CBBT Executive Director Jeff Holland, a subcommittee will meet today and choose the company.
The companies all chose a "bored" tunnel for the project that is expected to begin construction in 2017 and help out with safety:
The Thimble Shoal tunnel is the opening nearest to Virginia Beach on the 17.6-mile bridge that connects to the Eastern Shore. A second milelong tunnel there would help in the event of a crash, increase safety and reduce lane closures for maintenance.
