As the city of Green Bay, Wis., wiith an estimated $150 million in needed stormwater repairs, the public words department has made the decision to retrofit several manhole covers with high-tech monitors from SmartCover Systems. These new monitoring systems collect real-time data about water levels in the city's storm and sanitary sewers.
Public Works Director Steve Grenier spoke on the importance of tracking potential issues as they are occurring rather than having to wait actually enter the system:
"We will be able to collect data in near real time ... I can know how long it takes before water gets into the sewer, how high the water gets and how long it takes to dissipate. We can check how the entire system and (water) basin is functioning," Grenier said.
