Michigan appears to have found a solution to the aging sewer lines that contributed to the closing of 25 beaches on Lake Michigan this year, dogs. Environmental Canine Services, a company founded in the state, uses dogs to locate the bacteria found in wastewater.
This past summer the company, which currently uses six dogs, tracked wastewater in Berrien County, MI where there were ongoing issues at five of the county's beaches:
“We’re finding that the beaches are closed and it’s because of human waste in the water. So we’re tracing back the drains trying to find where either there’s a failing septic system or maybe there’s a storm water drain and a sewer crossing,” Kohring said.
