Rain and freeze sensors

The WR2 Wireless Rain and Rain/Freeze Sensors automatically sense and measure both rain and cold temperatures to prevent unnecessary irrigation, saving water as well as wear on irrigation system components. The system interrupts an irrigation controller's prescheduled cycle if one of six programmable rainfall set points, or one of three temperature set points, is satisfied. Rain Bird Corp. www.rainbird.com.

Midsize tractors for entry-level users

Two tractors for farming and landscaping now have increased power and versatility. Both DS4110 and DS4510 (pictured) models have a rear 540-rpm power take-off, with the DS4110 at 33.4 hp and the DS4510 at 37.6 hp. The two models also have four-wheel drive, power steering, wet disc brakes, and a choice among agricultural, turf, or industrial tires. KIOTI. www.kioti.com.

Groom lawns and sports fields

Groom ‘N' Sweep broom attachments mount on utility vehicles, tractors, and other service vehicles to remove debris and groom lawns and sportsfield surfaces. They feature eight brush rows for aggressive cleaning and grooming and polypropylene brush sections for durability and flexibility. Two models are available: GB60 with a 60-in.-long mainframe and GB72 with a 72-in.-long mainframe. TurfEx, a division of TrynEx International. www.trynexfactory.com.

Rear-tine tiller

The FRC800 rear-tine tiller features easy operation through simple controls with one-step tine and drive engagement. A front bumper guard, heavy-duty transmission, and debris shield enhance durability. Powered by a GX series four-stroke engine that's quiet, easy to start, and more fuel-efficient than comparably sized two-stroke designs, it offers virtually smoke-free operation and ultra-low emissions. Protect against seed and soil loss

Safe Slope is a natural fiber hydromulch made from a blend of cotton plant byproducts, other crop residue, and polymers to protect against seed and soil loss from the elements. It uses both chemical and mechanical techniques to create a flexible, porous seal, absorbing and holding enough moisture to facilitate seed growth and reduce erosion. The product will be available mid-2010. Leggett & Platt. www.landmarkearthsolutions.com.

Erosion control

Mirafi MiraGreen D recycled nonwoven drainage textiles are used for subsurface drainage applications along highways, green roofs, and athletic fields. The textiles are composed of 30% recycled content and contribute toward three key categories in LEED: sustainable sites, materials and resources, and innovation and design process. TenCate Geosynthetics. www.tencate.com.

Rotating tree shear

The hydraulically rotating Timberline Tree Shear, designed for excavators, allows users to reach in and cut up to a 14-in.-diameter tree in one cut. A T 1 steel blade uses more than 700,000 lbs. of force. The ability to rotate after the cut allows the attachment to also serve as a grapple to lift, wrangle, and carry the fallen tree. Sidney Manufacturing Co. LLC. www.sidneyattachments.com.

Compact chipper

The 660 6-in. disk-style wood chipper is ultra-compact, so it can be towed by compact trucks and sport utility vehicles. Equipped with a powerful feed system and a 27-hp engine, it is designed for trimming, pruning, and cleanup jobs. JP Carlton. www.stumpcutters.com.

Reduce edging time by 75%

Eliminate time-consuming hand edging and the need for two-cycle edgers with Edge-EZE. The edger delivers a clean edge up to 2½ in. deep at up to 600 ft./ minute along sidewalks, driveways, and roadways. Both electric and manual versions provide vertical adjustment up to 12 in. and allow edging from the sidewalk, turf, or curb. Grasshopper. www.grasshoppermower.com.

Durable, efficient rotor system

Improved production levels highlight the Bull Hog HDT rotor system, which includes maintaining the same horsepower and maximum durability. The rotor system can be equipped with three different carbide options and a knife tool that allows operators to quickly configure their mulcher to diverse conditions. Fecon Inc. www.fecon.com.

Bark blowers

Ideal for small to midsize mulching projects such as mulch beds, playgrounds, sports field overseeding, and erosion control, the BB302 and BB705 trailer-mounted bark blowers can apply an even, uniform layer of coverage (i.e., mulch, soil, compost, light aggregate, playground chips) in hard-to-reach areas. They feature specially engineered rotary airlock and blower systems, providing enough power to apply material up to 200 feet away. Finn Corp. www.finncorp.com.

Versatile pull-behind aerator

The 12-in. self-storing wings on the Versa- Tow turf aerator allows operation at 36, 48, or 60 in. The wings float independently for use on uneven terrain. The 13x6-in. tires lower with a hand-operated actuator for transport. SourceOne Power Equipment. www.souceonex.com.

Redesigned Zero-turning Radius Mowers

The Z Master G3 commercial mowers were revamped using feedback from hundreds of landscapers. The modifications include increased traction, enhanced hillside stability, and improved operator comfort. The new height-of-cut system gives operators 1- to 5½-in. cuts in ¼-in. increments. The Toro Co. www.toro.com.

Specialty herbicide

Using the breakthrough molecule aminopyralid, Milestone VM specialty herbicide provides long-lasting control of problem weeds and brush, including noxious and invasive species in rights of way, natural areas, and grazed areas. The herbicide is equally effective at multiple stages of growth. Some labeled species include musk thistle, Canada thistle, locust, yellow star thistle, various knapweeds, redbud, and tropical soda apple. Dow AgroSciences. www.vegetationmgmt.com.

Chipper engine options

Two engine options on the BC1000XL brush chipper offer fuel-efficient diesel-engine technology and less emission production. Both engines — a clean-burning 49- hp Cat C2.2L Tier 4 or 85-hp Cummins B3.3 Tier 3 turbo diesel — are powerful enough to process material up to 1 ft. in diameter and have 25-gal. fuel tanks that lessen the time spent refueling. Vermeer Corp. www.vermeer.com.

Micro dumper truck

Debris, fallen timber, leaves, stones, and rubble can be easily moved with the Muck-truck. The small dumper truck has a 6-cu.-ft. hopper that can hold a ¼-ton payload (with optional extension sides that increase carrying capacity by 30%), a Honda GXV160 5.5-hp engine, and three forward and reverse speeds with four-wheel drive.
