The Asphalt Pavement Alliance has released a technical document that examines the activities that have taken place in the last 10 years and synthesizes the information to provide guidance for perpetual pavement design and construction. The 10-year-old coalition of asphalt industry associations released the document Feb. 17 during the World of Asphalt show & conference in Cincinnati.
The Feb. 17 release coincided with the announcement of a new Web site (asphaltroads.org) as well as a new marketing campaign. The tagline - "America rides on us" - is a nod to the material's use on the nation's roads as the most recycled material in the United States. "It's the perfect pavement for city planners as they design livable communities," says Christie Barbee, co-chair of the APA's Advocacy Team, which authored a white paper titled "America Rides on Us. Asphalt."
The white paper examines trends at the federal and state levels regarding sustainability and livable communities. It also highlights advances in several new technologies, including rubblization, warm-mix asphalt, and porous pavements.
"Asphalt can be maintenance material, can be new smooth overlay or it can be a perpetual pavement," adds Larry Lemon, chairman of the National Asphalt Pavement Association, one of APA's partners along with the State Asphalt Pavement Associations and the Asphalt Institute.
