Wastewater facility managers expressed the need for federal guidance and increased funding in a survey conducted by GAO.

According to a survey conducted by the Government Accountability Office, wastewater treatment facilities require more federal funding and direction. Of the 206 facility managers surveyed, 102 recommended an increase in federal funding. Facility managers suggested that funding be aimed in specific directions, such as purchasing security equipment, performing vulnerability assessments, and covering the cost of changing wastewater treatment chemicals.

Facility managers expressed the need for federal guidance and standards, training and education, and security information. Managers also noted that miscommunication among the U.S. EPA, Department of Homeland Security, and agencies in charge of facility security leads to inefficiency and overlapping efforts.
