Hug Our Trees (GoFundMe.com): Portales, N.M., resident Mike Davidson seeks to bring some greenery to the city’s dry landscape by rehabilitating and replacing the trees.

The project: The trees in Portales, N.M. reportedly are in sad shape; this GoFundMe-based crowdfunding project seeks to bring some greenery to the town’s dry landscape by rehabilitating and replacing the trees.

The status: The project seems to have taken root, but hasn’t branched out. Created by resident Mike Davidson, the project has raised $1,820—impressive, but short of its towering $25,000 goal.

The good: Who doesn’t love trees?

The bad: Davidson estimates it would cost $700 to restore one tree, a fairly modest amount. However, the town would still have to come up with the funding for the trees’ upkeep down the road.

The verdict: Trees play an important role in beautifying towns, shading its citizens, and protecting the environment, so this project deserves to succeed so that the trees of Portales can get a little more love.
