Washington, D.C. – Georgetown-, GW- and American University Parents and Family weekend is upon us, making this one of Georgetown’s busiest shopping weekends of the year. To enhance the experience of being in Georgetown, the Georgetown Business Improvement District (BID) will temporarily widen the sidewalks along the 3200 Block of M Street between Wisconsin Avenue and Potomac Street starting at 6:30 p.m. on Friday, October 17 through 5 p.m. Sunday, October 19. Additionally, visitors will enjoy discounted parking at two nearby garages on Saturday and Sunday, and the DC Circulator will also offer a FREE northbound ride up Wisconsin Avenue, NW both days.

Sidewalks will be widened on both the North and South sides—providing eight extra feet of pedestrian space on each side.

“This sidewalk widening pilot is an action item outlined in the Georgetown 2028 strategic plan,” says Will Handsfield, Transportation Director at the Georgetown BID. “Georgetown is a top destination every day of the year, but we always see much heavier visitation on weekends, especially Parents weekend,” added Joe Sternlieb, Georgetown BID CEO. “This is the second location that we will pilot temporary sidewalk widening to make our retail streets more comfortable for residents and visitors on a busy weekend. Georgetown is wonderful place to shop, dine, and explore D.C. history, and the sidewalk widening pilot is part of our ongoing effort to improve the experience of being in our commercial district.”

The BID will sponsor free DC Circulator rides on the northbound only Wisconsin Avenue segment of the Union Station-to-Georgetown route for any passenger boarding a bus between 30th/K stop and Whitehaven Parkway stop (30th/K, Wisconsin/K, Wisconsin/M, Wisconsin/N, Wisconsin/Q, and Wisconsin/R).

PMI will offer a $5 daily flat rate for parking at the 3307 M Street garage, accessed via Bank Street; Colonial Parking will offer a 25% discount off of regular parking rates at the Georgetown Park garage at 3222 M Street (discounted daily rate will be $15), which must be booked in advance online.
