St. Louis-based consulting firm Horner & Shifrin Inc. received a Merit Award from the American Council of Engineering Companies of Illinois for its Phase I study of solutions to eliminate flooding on Interstate 55, 10 miles south of Springfield, for the Illinois DOT's Region 6.
The project consists of a Phase I study for replacement of twin structures over Brush Creek in Sangamon County. The interstate pavement and bridges have been overtopped on more than one occasion, necessitating the replacement of the structures on a raised vertical alignment. Complex maintenance of traffic issues were addressed, as was the removal of a frontage road bridge for better water flow.
