Research commissioned by InSinkErator shows that putting apple cores and carrot tops down the disposal is better for the environment than landfilling the stuff. If a community of 30,000 homes — the size of Newport Beach, Calif. — were to divert such waste, it would be equivalent to cutting 2,100 tons of carbon dioxide emissions or eliminating 4.6 million miles of traffic. InSinkErator is the world's largest manufacturer of disposers and hot water dispensers.
