As workers bolted the last section of the Lowry Avenue Bridge's steel arches into place, Hennepin County, Minn., Commissioner Mark Stenglein predicted the 1,575-foot structure could serve five times longer than its predecessor, which spanned the Mississippi River until 2009.
The design uses post-tensioned concrete box girder cells on the approach spans and an edge girder framework across the 450-foot main span. Structural support comes primarily from the two stay-cable arches and a multistrand post-tensioning system within the edge girder. Eighteen stay cables extend between each 90-foot steel arch and the edge girders. The arches are inclined 20 degrees toward one another to create a “basket-handle” appearance.
Amenities include an anti-icing system, LED lights along the arches and within the ornamental railing, and an underground stormwater treatment facility to treat 80 acres of runoff. Visit www.lowryavenuebridge.com.
