The Federal Highway Administration's (FHWA) Pedestrian and Bicycle Information Center unveiled its inaugural Walk Friendly Communities list. Eleven cities and towns were chosen based on policies that encourage walking, as well as several related categories including safety, mobility, access, and comfort. They are:

  • Seattle
  • Ann Arbor, Mich.
  • Arlington, Va.
  • Hoboken, N.J.
  • Santa Barbara, Calif.
  • Charlottesville, Va.
  • Decatur, Ga.
  • Austin, Texas
  • Charlotte, N.C.
  • Flagstaff, Ariz.
  • Wilsonville, Ore.

The list both recognizes and motivates walk-friendly communities. The Web-based application process provides feedback and ideas for promoting pedestrian safety and activity. The program is funded by FedEx and the FHWA. Visit www.walkfriendly.org.
