As a PW professional, you are just one person in a large field of unsung heroes. This year's National Public Works Week—May 20–26—gives you a chance to tell your story and celebrate your contributions with your peers.

Since 1960, the American Public Works Association has commemorated the seven-day event. This year's theme—“Public Works: The Heart of Every Community”—aims to demonstrate to constituents the crucial role that PW plays in the everyday life of a municipality. In the past, departments across the country have organized their own local events during Public Works Week. For example, in 2006, the Montgomery County (Md.) Department of Public Works organized a photo contest encouraging residents to send in pictures of road construction, recycling, or other PW services in action; the winner and finalists each took home savings bonds.

The APWA offers posters, t-shirts, books, and other resources to help you celebrate PW during National Public Works Week and all year round. For more information, visit
