With the YourGOV Mobile citizen request application, residents can report nonemergency issues and service requests - such as potholes, vandalism, and streetlight outages - directly from their mobile smartphones. Check the health of waterways anywhere in the U.S from your smartphone, tablet, or desktop computer. The How’s My Waterway app and website uses GPS technology or a user-entered zip code or city name to provide information about the quality of local water bodies. Users instantly receive a list of waterways within five miles of the search location. Each waterway is identified as unpolluted, polluted, or unassessed. A map option offers the a view of the search area with the results color-coded by assessment status. This mobile safety platform offers a new way for public utilities to keep their community safe and informed. It enables local utilities to issue real-time, location-based alerts to an area of their choosing. Need to know highway conditions while planning your route in Missouri? MoDOT Traveler Information App, better known as the “map app,” provides a map of the state with all major roads highlighted. They're color coded to indicate road conditions or construction. Those working in the field update the conditions of the road by radioing back to MoDOT headquarters, and the status is changed within five minutes. Xerox Transportation (Mobile Web)
The SmartBus System was introduced in 2010 in Brampton, Canada. The mobile web app allows riders to access the site from any phone with a browser. Once you load the site, simply enter the bus number, and you will receive real-time information about that particular bus. The system is custom built and can be tailored to fit the needs of any city. The system also includes electronic message signs at terminals and on-board LED signs showing next stop information, interactive voice response for telephone access, and more. U.S. Census Bureau (Android)
The America's Economy app lets you take the pulse of the U.S. economy straight from your smartphone. It provides real-time updates for 16 key economic indicators released from the U.S. Census Bureau, Bureau of Labor Statistics, and Bureau of Economic Analysis. Measures include employment, manufacturing, international trade, residential construction and sales, and more. It is currently only available on Google's Android platform, but the bureau says it will be coming soon to Apple for its iPhone and other devices. Download for free.


Xerox/Streetline Inc. (Apple, Android)
With the sensor-enabled Parker, motorists can see open parking spaces in real time - and if there's no street parking available it'll direct drivers to nearby parking lots and garages. The app is currently available through public-private partnerships with Indianapolis and Los Angeles, where sensors have been embedded in the pavement to detect when spaces are available. Once parked, motorists can use the app's built-in timer to track how much time is left on the meter, or access walking directions back to their parking spaces. Download this app.

The Green Business Challenge is a proven and cost-effective program co-developed by ICLEI and the City of Chicago; it not only helps businesses improve their environmental performance, it helps local governments meet their communitywide energy and sustainability goals. Participants access the app through the local government’s website, and use it to register, take a baseline survey, browse a library of tips and resources, update their achievements, view a scorecard that tracks their progress toward goals, read customized suggestions for ways to increase their score, and operate a carbon calculator. Program administrators can use the app to customize the program, view reports on participants’ progress, and send mass emails to maintain engagement.
