The EPA has added the first water utility—Voorhees, N.J.-based American Water—to join its Climate Leaders program.
Launched in 2002, Climate Leaders is an industry-government partnership geared toward developing long-term, comprehensive climate change strategies. As the program's newest member, the utility has pledged to reduce and inventory its corporation-wide greenhouse gas emissions.
The program has nearly 80 corporate members. The EPA estimates that greenhouse gas reductions by these companies stand to prevent more than 8 million metric tons of carbon equivalents per year—equal to eliminating emissions from 5 million cars each year.
