Name: Christopher Burke, Ph.D, PE, D.WRE, Dist. ASCE
Title: President, Christopher B. Burke Engineering Ltd.
Where: Rosemont, Ill.
What: Civil and water resources consulting firm that’s served as engineer or engineering consultant to 40 communities in Illinois and Indiana and as an expert witness for 150 civil engineering-related cases.

Since 1986, Christopher Burke’s company has overseen thousands of miles of roadway design and construction, initiated one of only two Illinois Bike to Work programs to achieve Gold status as a bicycle-friendly business by the League of American Bicyclists, and worked on hundreds of stormwater projects.

“His ability to communicate complex issues in an easy-to-understand manner has been critical to the successful implementation of numerous flood-improvement projects,” says client John Ingram, infrastructure maintenance director for the Village of Orland Park, Ill., which had been plagued by stormwater-control issues.

Burke developed a special training program for summer interns. Instead of having senior engineers talk about civil engineering disciplines and typical projects, employees with just two to five years of experience conduct the sessions. This gives young engineers the chance to practice valuable public speaking skills by organizing a presentation that synthesizes what they’ve learned.

Despite all of these accomplishments, Burke is most proud of “helping educate the future leaders of our profession” for the last 12 years at the Illinois Institute of Technology, University of Illinois at Chicago, and Purdue University.
