Competing for a $1.7 billion project to widen Interstate 70 through North Denver, four international companies got a look earlier this month at the formal “Request for Proposals” from the Colorado Department of Transportation.

The full “request for proposals” will be released on Sept. 29 and continue to be changed several times over as companies ask questions and make suggestions on how the project should be built. 

It’s the biggest project CDOT has ever tackled, and includes widening I-70 between I-25 and I-225, adding toll lanes to the existing free lanes, removing the 50-year-old viaduct between Brighton and Colorado boulevards and sinking a section of the highway and putting a lid on top of it near a north Denver elementary school.
