The American Public Works Association (APA) has honored three agencies with the 2016 Excellence in Snow and Ice Control Awards. The award, which promotes the the best practices in snow and ice removal while minimalizing environmental impacts, was awarded to these three recipient: City of Longmont, CO. Department of Public Works and Natural Resources; Village of Buffalo Grove, IL. Public Works Department; Town of Orangetown, NY. Highway Department.

The Buffalo Grove’s Public Works Department is responsible for a premier community located in the northern suburbs of Chicago that is home to over 41,000 residents. The Public Works Department is responsible for the winter maintenance of 114 center road line miles of roads, requiring 522 plowing miles to effectively clear all streets. As a primarily residential community, the Public Works Department is also responsible for complete winter maintenance activities on 369 cul-de-sacs. Winter maintenance activities are also completed on six municipal parking lots, and parking lot maintenance that serves the mass transportation systems within the Village limits that includes Pace Bus and the Metra Community Rail Station.
